WHAT IS BAPTISM ?
Ans: The word baptism comes from the Greek word baptizo which means to
immerse or dip. In a biblical sense, to baptize a person in water means
to put that person completely under the water, then immediately raise
him or her up again.
1. BAPTISM = DEATH + BURIED + RESURRECTION.
Romans 6:3-5 says “For surely you know that when we were baptized into
union with Christ Jesus, we were baptized into union with his death. By
our baptism, then, we were buried with him and shared his death, in
order that, just as Christ was raised from death by the glorious power
of the Father, so also we might live a new life. For since we have
become one with him in dying as he did, in the same way we shall be one
with him by being raised to life as he was.
Colossians 2:12
says “For when you were baptized, you were buried with Christ, and in
baptism you were also raised with Christ through your faith in the
active power of God, who raised him from death.”
2. WHY SHOULD ONE TAKE BAPTISM?
1. TO TURN AWAY FROM SINS. (FOR SINS FORGIVEN)
2. TO BE SAVED.
3. TO RECEIVE THE GOD’S GIFT – HOLYSPIRIT.
Acts 22:16 says “And now, why wait any longer? Get up and be baptized and have your sins washed away by praying to him.”
Mark 16:16 says “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned.”
Acts 2:38 says “Peter said to them, Each one of you must turn away from
your sins and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your
sins will be forgiven; and you will receive God's gift, the Holy
Spirit.”
3. BAPTISM SHOULD BE GIVEN IMMEDIATELY OR CAN BE DELAYED?
Acts 8:26-36 “Once the Ethiopian Official was on his way home to
Jerusalem, As he rode along, he was reading from the book of the prophet
Isaiah, Philip ran over and heard him reading from the book of the
prophet Isaiah. He asked him, Do you understand what you are reading?
The official replied, How can I understand unless someone explains it to
me? So Philip began to Explain; starting from this passage of
scripture, he told him the Good News about Jesus.”
PHILIP GIVES IMMEDIATELY BAPTISM AS SOON AS THE OFFICIAL HEAR THE MESSAGE OF GOD.
Acts 8:36 “As they traveled down the road, they came to a place where
there was some water, and the official said, Here is some water. What is
to keep me from being baptized?”
PAUL & SILAS BAPTIZES JAILER & HIS FAMILY AT THE VERY HOUR. THEY PREACHED THE WORD OF GOD.
Acts 8:32,33 Then they(Paul & Silas) preached the word of the Lord
to him(Jailer) and to all the others in the house. At that very hour of
the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; and he and all
his family were baptized at once.
4. HOW WE NEED TO TAKE BAPTISM? BY SPRINKLING OR IMMERSING?
John 3:5 Jesus replied “I am telling you the truth, that no one can
enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.
JOHN WAS BAPTIZING IN THE PLACE WHERE THERE WAS PLENTY OF WATER.
John 3:23 says “John also was baptizing in Aenon, not far from Salim,
because “There was Plenty of Water” in that place. People were going to
him, and he was baptizing them.
Acts 8:38,39 says “The
official ordered the carriage to stop, and both Philip and the official
“Went down into the Water,” and Philip baptized him. When they “came up”
out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord took Philip away. The official
did not see him again, but continued on his way, full of joy.”
BAPTISM IS A SYMBOL WHICH SAVES US.
1 Peter 3:21 “which was a symbol pointing to baptism, which now saves
you. It is not the washing off of bodily dirt, but the promise made to
God from a good conscience. It saves you through the resurrection of
Jesus Christ.”
Galatians 3:27 says “You were baptized into
union with Christ, and now you are clothed, so to speak, with the life
of Christ himself.”
JESUS HIMSELF BECAME AN EXAMPLE FOR US THAT WE NEED TO GET BAPTIZED.
Matthew 3:16 says “As soon as Jesus was baptized, he came up out of the
water. Then heaven was opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God
coming down like a dove and lighting on him.”
Mark 1:9 Not long afterward Jesus came from Nazareth in the province of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
BAPTISM IS A COMMAND FROM GOD.
JESUS SAID “ IF YOU REALLY LOVE ME, YOU WILL OBEY MY COMMANDS.”
( John 14:23
